Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service's Procurement of Calculators

Gao ID: 108817 January 24, 1979

Efforts to improve productivity through large-scale purchase and use of expensive electronic programmable calculators by the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) were reviewed.

In spite of concerns by ASCS involving the use of programmable calculators, and before attempting to analyze the need for such equipment, ASCS gave State and county officials authority to buy programmable calculators costing as much as $1,500 each. These officials purchased or ordered almost 1,400 such calculators. Current plans are for ASCS to buy 600 more.
