Farmers Home Administration Rural Housing Eligibility Procedures

Gao ID: RCED-83-188 June 17, 1983

In response to a congressional request, GAO examined the Farmers Home Administration's (FmHA) procedures for determining the eligibility of geographic areas under rural housing programs.

GAO found that FmHA criteria for defining a rural area are reasonable and practices followed by FmHA officials in the four areas reviewed are generally consistent with regulations and procedures. In the locations examined, GAO found only one subdivision in major need of housing assistance, and it appears to be eligible for alternative sources of housing aid. Additionally, all of the locations declared ineligible by FmHA are currently receiving housing assistance from other Federal, State, or local sources.
