Status of the All-Resource Cost Reporting Project Gao ID: AFMD-89-65 April 14, 1989

In response to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Forest Service's development of an all-resources cost reporting system to provide integrated, consistent, complete, and accurate program cost information on the National Forest System, focusing on the: (1) type of financial information to be reported; and (2) Service's progress in system development.

GAO found that the Service: (1) planned to complete a system design and initiate testing by September 30, 1989; (2) planned to implement the system in fiscal year 1990, after a review of test results; (3) had collected comprehensive data on program management, cost data sources, and potential reporting formats; (4) planned to make some procedural changes before full implementation; and (5) would continue its developmental efforts while providing training to managers on system use. GAO believes that the system would provide valuable information to the Service and Congress on the cost of managing national forests.
