Training Programs

Information on Fiscal Years 1989 and 1990 Appropriations Gao ID: HRD-89-71FS April 14, 1989

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on federal government programs with significant occupational training components.

GAO found that: (1) 6 departments had 45 programs with significant occupational training components; (2) the Department of Education administered 21 programs, with fiscal year (FY) 1989 funding of $11.1 billion; (3) five Education programs focused on non-college-bound individuals, and seven Department of Veterans' Affairs programs offered some such services; (4) the 45 programs had total FY 1989 funding of $16.7 billion; (5) FY 1990 budget requests for 38 programs totalled $16.3 billion, with no funding requests for the 7 remaining programs; and (6) both Education and the Department of Labor received $3.9 billion in training program appropriations for non-college-bound participants.
