School Lunch Program

Buy American Procedures at Schools With Cash or Credit in Lieu of Food Gao ID: RCED-89-183 August 9, 1989

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO evaluated compliance with Buy American requirements under the National School Lunch Program.

GAO found that: (1) although the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) and two of the three states it visited were aware of or had implemented interim Buy American requirements, not all school districts inspected product labels to ensure that the requirements were being met; and (2) FNS contracted with a university to develop procedures for program operations and issue letters of credit to participating school districts.
