Timber Sales Program

Issues Surrounding the Timber Sales Cost Reporting System Gao ID: AFMD-90-48BR February 28, 1990

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Forest Service's implementation of the Timber Sale Program Information Reporting System (TSPIRS).

GAO found that the Forest Service: (1) properly implemented the program; (2) reported all significant direct timber costs; and (3) gained useful information for monitoring the financial condition of the timber sales program and the effect of timber harvesting on other national forest resource programs. GAO also found that some changes were needed to: (1) separately disclose the cost of road construction; and (2) modify the method for computing the cost of growing timber.
