Consolidating Federal Stream Forecasting Activities May Reduce Duplication of Resources and Effort
Gao ID: RCED-84-104 July 24, 1984GAO reported on the stream forecasting activities of the National Weather Service (NWS), the Army Corps of Engineers, and other federal water resources operating agencies. The report determined whether opportunities exist to consolidate activities among agencies.
GAO found that the agencies have developed independent stream forecasting capabilities which results in duplication of equipment, staff, and effort. GAO noted that the results of applying consolidation concepts to the Ohio River Basin indicate that benefits would result from establishing a joint regional data center in this basin. Similar benefits may also be possible in other river basins where more than one agency has established a capability to collect and store information and prepare stream forecasts to meet agency-specific requirements.
