Assessment of Commerce Report on Extending Controls for South Africa Gao ID: NSIAD-87-3 October 27, 1986

GAO assessed the Secretary of Commerce's July 1986 report to Congress on extending foreign policy controls on exports to South Africa to ensure that it fully complied with statutory reporting requirements.

GAO found that the Secretary's report: (1) complied with the statutory reporting requirements of the Export Administration Amendments Act of 1985; (2) largely addressed the recommendations GAO made in its assessment of the Secretary's earlier report; and (3) lacked complete information concerning U.S. efforts to secure the cooperation of foreign governments in controlling the import of embargoed products by South Africa.
