Export Licensing

Number of Applications Reviewed by the Defense Department Gao ID: NSIAD-88-176FS May 13, 1988

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Department of Defense's (DOD) role in export licensing of militarily significant products, comparing it with the Department of Commerce's role.

GAO found that: (1) DOD reviews licenses for 8 product categories and 15 foreign countries; (2) DOD has reviewed a declining number of applications each year since 1986; and (3) it was unable to explain a discrepancy between Commerce and DOD data regarding the number of applications that Commerce referred for DOD review and the number of applications that DOD actually reviewed, but both agencies' data showed declines in the number of applications reviewed since 1986.
