About 88 percent of the respondents were satisfied with the benefits provided. Forty six percent of the respondents indicated that they planned to continue their career with PHS and 34 percent did not. More than 75 percent who planned to remain in PHS indicated that they would not have stayed without special pay. None of the general schedule (GS) physicians and dentists was highly satisfied with the present salary. Sixty five percent of the GS personnel planned to continue with PHS and 17 percent planned to leave. Reasons most frequently cited for leaving PHS were: job characteristics, salary and benefits, job assignment locations, and better opportunities elsewhere.
