Emergency Power Generators Used and Managed Inefficiently by Department of Defense

Gao ID: LCD-77-406 May 20, 1977

The Department of Defense (DOD) needs to make improvements in the management and use of the emergency power generators, which provide backup power for vital DOD facilities, such as hospitals, if normal power sources fail.

DOD needs to provide standard guidelines to the services on how to best manage and use emergency power generators. More stringent DOD and service criteria on the authorization and use of emergency power generators could reduce many of the problems noted at the installations visited, such as generator capacities greater than required, unnecessary and duplicate generators, inconsistencies in generator use, and unnecessary costs to maintain duplicate systems.
