Greater Emphasis Needed on Military Fish and Wildlife and Public Outdoor Recreation Planning and Management Activities

Gao ID: CED-77-106 August 3, 1977

Although about 19 million of the 26 million acres of land administered by the Department of Defense (DOD) are now managed for fish and wildlife purposes, programs at some military installations have not reached their full potential.

Some installations have strong and aggressive fish and wildlife programs, but some installations have fish and wildlife plans that are outdated or inadequate because of a lack of necessary planning data. Many installations have plans that have not been fully implemented because of a lack of funds and technical assistance. Other installations have potential for fish and wildlife conservation, but have no programs because of a lack of start-up funds.
