U.S. Antisatellite Program Needs a Fresh Look

Gao ID: C-MASAD-83-5 January 27, 1983

GAO reviewed the current Air Force antisatellite development program and alternative weapons systems with antisatellite capabilities and also assessed the Department of Defense's (DOD) analysis of antisatellite alternatives and their estimated costs.

GAO found that the antisatellite development system cost is estimated at $3.6 billion. GAO compared several alternatives to the miniature vehicle system and concluded that a determination needs to be made as to whether the United States is developing the appropriate capability to perform the antisatellite mission.
