Air Force HH-60D Helicopter Acquisition Program

Gao ID: NSIAD-83-49 August 23, 1983

GAO reviewed the HH-60D Helicopter Acquisition Program and discussed recent events that impact it.

In response to concerns expressed by Congress and GAO, the HH-60D Helicopter Acquisition Program is being restructured and the quantity of helicopters to be procured for combat rescue will be reduced substantially. Congress encouraged the Air Force to consider a smaller rescue force mix comprised of varying levels of capability and recommended no advance procurement authorization for the program in fiscal year 1984. Although GAO made no recommendations, it requested information concerning the means the Air Force intends to use in restructuring the program and the intended aircraft configuration, quantities, and costs.
