Department of the Army's Competitive Test and Evaluation of Alternative Light Antiarmor Weapons

In response to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Army's competitive test and evaluation of alternative light antiarmor weapons (LAW's).

After testing six types of LAW's and evaluating the test results and the price proposals provided by the weapon system's contractors, the Army informed Congress that it had selected a weapon developed in Sweden for further testing. The Marine Corps chose the same weapon. Both services have committed themselves to further testing but not necessarily to procurement. They plan to perform a limited test of 36 weapons, including 24 to be modified for deficiencies, before proceeding with a development and operational test. GAO was on site throughout the full test cycle observing the tests. It verified the recorded test results and reviewed the source selection data used to select the winner. In the opinion of GAO, the test and evaluation were conducted objectively and the report provided to Congress accurately reflected the test results.
