Release of Service Members' Addresses to a Political Campaign Committee Gao ID: NSIAD-86-61 February 21, 1986

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed whether a Reagan-Bush Campaign Committee request for the names and official business addresses of military personnel was processed according to Department of Defense (DOD) policy and regulations.

GAO found that: (1) the requested names and addresses were compiled before the office responsible for controlling information requests became involved; (2) coordination with DOD components did not occur until after the decision was made to release the data; (3) the DOD components with the greatest proprietary interest in the material being released did not process the information request; and (4) DOD did not consider the effect the requested information would have on current litigation concerning the nondisclosure of similar information.
