Selected Defense Agencies

Current and Historical Information on Missions, Work Force, and Budget Gao ID: NSIAD-86-81FS March 7, 1986

In response to a congressional request, GAO provided a fact sheet showing the current and historical mission, work force, and budget of several Department of Defense agencies.

GAO presented information on each agency's: (1) budget and civilian/military work force for the earliest year readily available and for fiscal year 1986; and (2) civilian occupational groups as of September 1975 and 1985, except for the Defense Mapping Agency, for which data were provided as of September 1975 and June 1985. GAO found that the information indicated that most of the agencies experienced only moderate growth in staffing levels from 1975 to 1986. The agencies' personnel expressed concern that significant changes may have occurred within an agency which would not be reflected in this fact sheet, thereby limiting its usefulness.
