DOD Acquisition Programs

Status of Selected Systems Gao ID: NSIAD-87-128 April 2, 1987

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed selected major defense acquisition programs scheduled to reach either full-scale development or full-rate production during fiscal year 1988 or 1989.

GAO found that: (1) all of the programs were candidates for designation as Defense Enterprise Programs; (2) 9 of the 19 programs had current cost estimates that increased their baseline cost estimates and 4 had current estimates which decreased their baseline estimates; (3) 7 of the programs were on schedule and 12 experienced schedule slippages ranging from 4 to 51 months, with an average delay of 17 months; and (4) 6 of the programs are expected to achieve performance expectations, while 2 may not achieve performance expectations without changes.
