Army Efforts To Automate Combat Service Support Gao ID: NSIAD-87-178FS July 31, 1987In response to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the status of the Army's effort to automate combat service support (CSS) activities.
GAO found that the: (1) Army plans to spend about $600 million to modernize its six CSS components at the corps and theater levels and to automate manual systems at lower command levels; (2) systems will collect, summarize, and organize the most important logistical, personnel, medical and inventory information for analysis at higher command levels; (3) systems will use new technology to reduce system cost and size, provide more efficient and user-friendly software, and provide more efficient data communications capabilities; (4) systems are commercial equipment modified for the tactical environment; and (5) Army will determine the specific capabilities and equipment options as the program progresses.
