Hazardous Waste

Tinker Air Force Base Is Making Progress in Cleaning Up Abandoned Sites Gao ID: NSIAD-87-164BR July 10, 1987

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Department of Defense's (DOD) efforts to dispose of hazardous waste at Tinker Air Force Base (AFB).

GAO found that, in 1985, Tinker AFB: (1) created the Installation Program Technical Review Committee to resolve problems in a more timely and effective manner; (2) established an environmental action group to increase its responsiveness to hazardous waste issues and to act as a clearinghouse for all environmental actions; (3) established a new Environmental Management Directorate to raise the visibility of environmental problems and enhance the working relationship with regulatory agencies; and (4) contracted with the Army Corps of Engineers to complete the Installation Restoration Program, which eliminated the need for private contractors and reduced the time needed to begin site cleanup work.
