Military Assistance for Drug Enforcement Agencies Gao ID: NSIAD-89-45 November 15, 1988

GAO assessed the Department of Defense's (DOD) compliance with DOD Authorization Act of 1988 and 1989 provisions requiring DOD to report on the nature and status of its providing military resources to drug law enforcement agencies.

GAO found that: (1) although DOD prepared an assistance list and distribution plan and convened a conference of law enforcement agency heads, it did not meet the statutory time frames for developing the list and holding the conference; (2) DOD did not enter into the required memorandums of agreements with civil agencies within the required time frames; and (3) DOD was working with civil agencies to further define the quantity and level of some assistance requested.
