DOD Civilians Overseas

Information on Workyears Expended in Fiscal Year 1986 Gao ID: NSIAD-88-199BR July 15, 1988

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO audited Department of Defense (DOD) records to determine the number of overseas civilian workyears it used in fiscal year (FY) 1986.

GAO found that DOD: (1) lacked a central source for data on the number of overseas civilian workyears it used; (2) initially estimated that it used 184,222 workyears in FY 1986, based on combined data from its components with a civilian presence overseas; (3) reported a revised figure of 188,496 after some of the components notified it of inaccuracies in their initial reports; (4) overstated its revised number by 2,294 workyears; and (5) actually expended 186,202 overseas civilian workyears in FY 1986.
