Potential Reductions to Aircraft Procurement Budgets Gao ID: NSIAD-90-15 October 5, 1989

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Air Force's fiscal year (FY) 1990 aircraft procurement budget and past procurement appropriations to identify potential budget reductions.

GAO found that the Air Force could reduce its FY 1990 aircraft procurement budget request by $308.1 million, and its FY 1989, 1988, and 1987 appropriations by $431.6 million, $30.7 million, and $46.6 million, respectively, since it overstated its requirements for: (1) the AC-130U gunship and initial spares; (2) the Advanced Radar Warning Receiver program; (3) F-16 aircraft, including Fire Control Radar and the Airborne Self-Protection Jammer; (4) common support equipment, including the Corsair Avionics System Tester and the Ground Power Generator System; (5) MH-60G PAVE HAWK helicopter; (6) the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared System for Night; and (7) the C-5B aircraft.
