Use of Mobile Ground Stations in Satellite Control Gao ID: IMTEC-89-53 July 3, 1989

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO determined: (1) how mobile ground stations fit into the Air Force's overall satellite control architecture; (2) how many stations exist and are planned; (3) station costs by program element and appropriation account; and (4) how much the Department of Defense (DOD) budgeted in fiscal year (FY) 1990 for mobile ground stations.

GAO found that: (1) the network of mobile ground stations, when completed, will supplement fixed stations' control of satellite orbit positions or process information from satellites; (2) as of May 1989, there were 39 existing mobile ground stations; (3) DOD estimated that it would have 84 mobile ground stations by 1998, at a cost of about $1.6 billion; and (4) the DOD FY 1990 budget request for mobile ground stations totalled about $92 million.
