Basic Elements of an Infection Control Program

Gao ID: HRD-90-25 January 1, 1990

GAO presented a list of 56 elements that experts considered necessary for an effective hospital-based infection control program, as part of its assessment of Departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense programs. Although GAO believed the elements would be useful to hospital personnel in establishing or evaluating infection control programs, it noted that they were only basic determinants of program effectiveness and should be used in conjunction with other applicable standards and guidelines.
