Navy Budget

Potential Reductions for Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation Gao ID: NSIAD-91-14BR November 30, 1990

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Navy's research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) budget request for fiscal year (FY) 1991 to determine: (1) whether the Navy adequately justified the funding requested; and (2) potential reductions in unused funds.

GAO found that: (1) there were potential RDT&E budget reductions of $242.704 million for FY 1990 and $534.910 million for FY 1991; and (2) potential reductions and rescissions in such areas as torpedo defense, ship development, information systems, aircraft research, and weapons development resulted from project transfers, schedule delays, program restructuring, and program termination.
