Status of Five-Year Defense Plan Gao ID: NSIAD-90-131 February 26, 1990

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the Department of Defense (DOD) 5-Year Defense Program.

GAO noted that: (1) DOD did not submit a revised 5-year program with the 1991 presidential budget and did not plan to submit a program until the end of the 1992 budget cycle; (2) legislation required that DOD detail how the obligational authority outlined in the presidential budget for the 5-year period would affect defense planning; and (3) DOD submitted a summary of planned budget reductions for 1992 through 1994, but could not submit a completed 5-year program until the resolution of existing international uncertainties.
