Designation of Joint Duty Assignments Gao ID: NSIAD-90-66 February 15, 1990

Pursuant to congressional requests, GAO reviewed the Department of Defense's (DOD) joint duty assignment list (JDAL) to determine whether assignments provided officers with experience in joint military operations.

GAO found that: (1) DOD has the discretion to determine the types of positions included on JDAL as long as the positions are not in a military department or for joint training or education; (2) 60 percent of the positions sampled in operational agencies and 42 percent of the positions sampled in support agencies provided joint operational experience; and (3) only a small percentage of positions provided single-service rather than joint experience.
