Contracting and Market Share Information Gao ID: IMTEC-90-35FS April 9, 1990

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Air Force's procurement of mainframe computers and peripheral equipment.

GAO found that: (1) between fiscal years 1986 and 1989, 98 percent of Air Force procurements for mainframe computer equipment required compatibility with other computer systems; (2) one manufacturer supplied the most equipment for Air Force mainframe procurements in both number of procurements and dollars; (3) the Air Force modified existing contracts to obtain equipment and meet compatibility requirements; and (4) the Air Force used new contracts with small disadvantaged firms in only 2 of 777 compatible procurements.
