Potential Reductions to Air Force and Navy Missile and Other Budgets Gao ID: NSIAD-90-272BR September 7, 1990

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the: (1) Air Force's fiscal year (FY) 1991 procurement budget request and past appropriations for the Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) and three other advanced weapons systems to identify potential budget reductions; and (2) Navy's FY 1991 missile procurement budget request for AMRAAM.

GAO found that the: (1) Air Force and the Navy could reduce their FY 1991 budget requests for AMRAAM by $1,338.4 million; (2) Air Force could potentially reduce $43.6 million from other programs' procurement budgets; and (3) reductions resulted primarily from development and production delays and lower-than-anticipated costs of negotiated contracts.
