Status of Recommendations on Officers' Professional Military Education Gao ID: NSIAD-91-88FS February 12, 1991

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO assessed the Marine Corps' implementation of a congressional panel's recommendations for professional military education schools.

GAO found that the Corps fully or partially implemented 28 of 31 recommendations, but did not plan to implement the remaining three recommendations, since it believed that: (1) those officers unable to attend an in-residence program should be allowed to attend the Phase II education, since its non-resident program could be nearly as effective as in-residence education; (2) military faculty whose education background was complemented by current and credible operational experience would be more effective than the establishment of a cadre of military career educators; and (3) a recommendation regarding a faculty exchange program with the service academies was impractical due to the different levels of focus for the service academies and intermediate schools.
