Defense Policies and Plans for Implementing Ada Gao ID: IMTEC-91-70BR September 6, 1991

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO obtained information on the Department of Defense's (DOD) implementation of legislation which mandated using the Ada programming language for all software development, where cost-effective.

GAO found that: (1) DOD and the services' current policies support the intent of the law to use Ada for all software development, including information systems and automated weapons systems; (2) all of the services required Ada for automated weapon systems, but only the Army and the Air Force required Ada for information systems; (3) the section of the policy governing waivers is not consistently interpreted and uniformly applied among the services; and (4) the Office of the Secretary of Defense plans to clarify waiver policies when it updates Defense software policies by the end of 1991.
