Nuclear Weapons Complex
GAO's Views on Reconfiguring the Complex Gao ID: T-RCED-92-49 April 1, 1992In addition to long-standing safety and environmental problems plaguing the nuclear weapons complex, the Department of Energy (DOE) faces a major new challenge--how to reconfigure the weapons complex to meet the nation's defense needs in the 21st century. Key decisions still need to be made about the size of the complex; where, if necessary, to relocate various operations; what technologies to use for new tritium production; and what to do with excess weapons-grade material. The choices confronting DOE and Congress are difficult given the conflicting demands for limited resources.
