1993 Navy Budget

Potential Reductions in Operation and Maintenance Programs Gao ID: NSIAD-92-334BR September 30, 1992

GAO reviewed the Navy's amended fiscal year 1992-93 budget request and identified $249.9 million in reductions to the Navy's operation and maintenance budget request for fiscal year 1993. Of this amount, $213.6 million is from the Navy's operation and reserve request and $36.3 million is from the Navy Reserve's operation and maintenance request.

GAO found that the Navy: (1) could potentially reduce its FY 1993 operation and maintenance budget request by $249.9 million, including $36.3 million for the Navy Reserve; and (2) could make the reduction because it mischarged and duplicated depreciation costs, should cancel its frigate trainer program and unneeded improvements in its sound surveillance system, excessively funded fleet air support and training, contractor support for cancelled programs, and habitability improvements for two ships that are to be deactivated, and will not be renewing a contract for departure assistance services that duplicates its relocation assistance program.
