Consolidated Interservice Training

Gao ID: NSIAD-93-177R April 26, 1993

GAO commented on whether the Department of Defense (DOD) could save money through increased use of consolidated interservice training. GAO noted that: (1) the Interservice Training Review Organization's (ITRO) plans to review military occupational specialties for consolidated training could be delayed due to a lack of funding; (2) ITRO has recommended consolidation of service explosive ordnance schools which could save $5 million annually, but $14 million in construction costs would be needed to accomplish the consolidation and funding is not expected until fiscal year 1996; and (3) the Military Training Structure Review process could provide an excellent opportunity to identify which military skills could be taught less expensively using alternative training strategies.
