DOD's Efforts to Improve Operations of the Defense Business Operations Fund Gao ID: T-AIMD/NSIAD-94-146 March 24, 1994This testimony presents GAO's views on the Defense Department's (DOD) operation and management of the Defense Business Operations Fund. The fund, which started up in 1989, will have estimated revenues of about $77 billion in fiscal year 1995, making it equivalent to some of the world's largest corporations. The fund operates on a break-even basis and provides the military services with goods and services, such as the overhaul of ships, tanks, and aircraft, as well as more than five million types of vital inventory, such as aircraft landing gear. GAO discusses DOD's (1) progress in improving fund operations, (2) development of the fiscal year 1995 prices the fund will charge its customers, and (3) management of the fund's capital asset program.
