Compensatory Education
Chapter 1 Services Provided to Private Sectarian School Students Gao ID: HRD-87-128BR September 21, 1987In response to a congressional request, GAO determined the impact of a Supreme Court ruling that held that it was unconstitutional to send public school teachers to teach in private sectarian schools.
GAO found that: (1) 10 of the school districts it evaluated spent an estimated $7.3 million to provide educational services to private sectarian schools; (2) while some districts adopted the use of mobile vans and portable classrooms, others used buildings close to sectarian schools as neutral sites; (3) the use of computer-assisted instruction as an educational alternative has increased from 2 percent to 17 percent; (4) state and local program officials believed that the decision decreased program participation and increased costs; and (5) program expenses for fiscal year 1988 may exceed proposed additional funding.
