Information on Consolidation Opportunities and Student Aid Gao ID: T-HEHS-95-130 April 6, 1995

The Education Department's budget for fiscal year 1995 accounts for about $33 billion in federal education assistance. The Department runs 244 education programs, and 30 other federal agencies administer another 308. This testimony discusses (1) opportunities to consolidate overlapping education programs; (2) potential cost savings attributed to the Department's proposal to accelerate and fully implement the direct student loan program; and (3) the Department's efforts to strengthen its "gatekeeping" over schools participating in federal student financial aid programs.
