GAO presented its Improving Federal Performance in the Information Age issue area plan for fiscal years 1996 through 1998.

GAO plans to assess: (1) major system development efforts and modernization programs that are at serious risk of failure; (2) how agencies can facilitate the success of new, high-potential information technology initiatives and existing modernization efforts; (3) how the government can overcome the root causes of chronic information management problems so that it consistently develops the technology infrastructure needed to reduce costs and improve performance; and (4) how agencies can identify and assess the relative importance of emerging information technology issues.
