Prospects for Continued Operation of DOE's Solar Test Facilities

In response to a congressional request, GAO examined the Department of Energy's (DOE's) plans for continuing Federal solar test facilities and for closing projects supported under its solar energy program.

GAO found that five solar test facilities will continue operations through fiscal year (FY) 1983, and DOE plans to fund operation of four of the facilities through FY 1984. GAO found that, although DOE is taking steps to protect the Federal investment in solar projects being closed out, little of the expended funds are expected to be recovered. GAO noted that data collection activities will be completed for most of the closed-out projects.
