Protecting Workers and the Public Continues to Challenge DOE Gao ID: T-RCED-94-283 September 22, 1994

This testimony focuses on the efforts of the Department of Energy (DOE) to protect the health and safety of the workers at its facilities and the people living in neighboring communities. GAO recently issued two reports on two key functions of DOE's Office of Environment, Safety, and Health--health surveillance and nuclear safety oversight. GAO discusses the finding and recommendations of these reports and the steps DOE has taken in response, as well as outstanding issues concerning the transition of DOE's facilities to regulation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
