GSA's Operation of a Firing Range in the Cincinnati Post Office and Courthouse Building
Gao ID: GGD-84-48 April 4, 1984Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed certain allegations concerning the General Services Administration's (GSA) operation of the indoor firing range located in the Cincinnati Post Office and Courthouse Building. A constituent had accused GSA of allowing the facility to remain open although it was a health and safety hazard.
GSA had temporarily closed the range for interim modifications in 1977 because tests showed that airborne lead contaminants exceeded safe levels. The range was reopened in a month, although tests continued to show a high level of contaminants. GAO found that GSA erroneously told the constituent that the range had been permanently closed after the initial tests. As a result of the revelation, GSA initiated an internal investigation to determine management responsiblity for actions taken relating to the firing range.
