Quality Mammography Standards Gao ID: OGC-98-14 November 26, 1997

Pursuant to a legislative requirement, GAO reviewed the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) new rule governing quality mammography standards. GAO noted that: (1) the rule amends FDA regulation governing mammography, including the requirements for accreditation bodies, procedures for facility certification, and quality standards for mammography personnel, equipment, and practices; the rule will provide increased assurance of adequate and consistent evaluation of mammography facilities on a nationwide level and compliance of the facilities with quality standards; and (2) FDA complied with applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
