Drug Treatment

Overview of Federal Programs Gao ID: HEHS-98-237R September 3, 1998

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on drug abuse treatment program profiles for the federal judiciary and seven executive branch agencies: the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Justice, and the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

GAO noted that each profile includes: (1) detailed drug abuse treatment funding for fiscal years 1998 and 1999, in terms of budget authority; (2) the agency's current strategic goals, objectives, targets, and performance measures for drug abuse treatment, developed in accordance with the Government Performance and Results Act; (3) for specific drug treatment programs: (a) descriptions of each activity; (b) their annual performance goals, objectives and targets, strategies, and performance measures, as described in the Results Act Performance Plan for fiscal year 1999; and (c) citations and key findings from their performance evaluations; and (4) selected program evaluations conducted over the past five years by agency inspectors general and GAO.
