Survey of Health Care Delivery in Bureau of Prisons' Facilities

Gao ID: 103150 August 5, 1977

There are gaps on the Bureau of Prisons' ability to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of its health care delivery system.

The Medical Division does not require or provide periodic physical examinations to inmates after their initial examination upon commitment. Health care units are not always reviewed or evaluated as scheduled. In actual practice, not all institutions are surveyed, and the central office maintains no records of when or whether surveys were conducted. Dental program surveys are also inadequate.
