Statistical Data on Indian Rights Cases Handled by Justice Gao ID: RCED-88-153FS April 26, 1988

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information and statistical data regarding the Department of Justice's (DOJ) Indian Resources Section's case load, staffing, and costs incurred in defending American Indians' rights.

GAO found that: (1) DOJ spent about $5.1 million for fiscal years 1982 through 1987 in defending Indian rights; (2) personnel compensation and benefits accounted for about $3.9 million of these funds, while other expenses, such as travel, rent, supplies, materials, and equipment accounted for about $1.2 million; (3) an average of approximately 10 attorneys and 4 staff members worked on Indian rights cases during the 6-year period; (4) attorneys worked 84,638 staff hours on 654 cases defending Indian rights; and (5) the Department of the Interior referred most of the cases for DOJ handling.
