Department of Justice's Response to Requests for Court Tax Decisions Gao ID: GGD-90-29FS December 13, 1989

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the Department of Justice's costs to provide copies of court decisions on tax matters under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

GAO found that: (1) in response to a Supreme Court decision, Justice had to make district court tax decisions available to requesters; (2) Justice set up a central reading room that was open to the public twice weekly; (3) the estimated annual costs to operate the reading room included $7,500 for rental space, $6,000 for copies provided, $6,000 for the room monitor's salary and benefits, and $4,000 for incidentals; and (4) revenues generated from making copies represented less than a third of the annual costs to operate the reading room.
