Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Department of Justice's (DOJ) compatible computer procurements.

GAO found that: (1) during a 3.5-year period ending March 1989, all of the 41 DOJ procurements for mainframes and mainframe peripherals required compatability with one manufacturer's equipment; (2) one manufacturer's equipment was supplied in 17 of 41 procurements; (3) overall, one manufacturer supplied more mainframe and mainframe peripheral equipment procurements than any other manufacturer; (4) DOJ obligated $38.5 million to procuring this manufacturer's equipment and $47.2 million for all others; and (5) modifications to existing contracts and General Services Administration schedule purchases were the most frequently used procurement methods.
