Gao ID: GGD-93-39R May 13, 1993

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO determined whether the Department of Justice (DOJ) violated applicable procedures in providing documents to a former Attorney General after he left office in August 1991. GAO noted that: (1) in December 1992 and January 1993, DOJ provided the former Attorney General with materials relating to his position; (2) DOJ did not provide any classified documents or screen the material for sensitive information; (3) some of the material given to the former Attorney General was sensitive and for limited official use; and (4) guidance on the removal of documents by former employees is being revised because it is unclear.
