Recent Concerns and Challenges for the Future Gao ID: T-GGD-95-177 June 8, 1995

In response to congressional concerns about, and challenges to, the Bureau of Prisons and correctional systems across the country, GAO's federal corrections work during the past eight years has focused on the following four areas: prison crowding; options for expanding prison capacity; privatization; and health care--including drug treatment. This testimony briefly describes the challenges and the issues confronting the Bureau of Prisons, recaps GAO's key findings and recommendations on these matters, and highlights concerns for the future.
